# Built-in dishwasher repair

Half the dishwashers we are called to are working correctly and installed badly. Telling those two apart is the first thing the diagnostic does.

Dominant regional stressor: humidity.

## Symptoms we get called out for

- Plastics still wet at the end of a cycle in a closed, humid kitchen
- Standing water left in the sump after the drain should have finished
- Cycle running far longer than it used to for a worse result
- Grit or food redeposited on the lower rack after a full cycle
- Detergent tablet still sitting undissolved in the dispenser at the end
- Door seal weeping at a lower corner
- Panel unresponsive or the cycle aborting partway through

## Before you call anyone (before)

Take the lower rack out and look at three things: the filter in the floor of the tub, the spray arms, and the arm's holes. A filter packed with debris starves the pump, and jets blocked with grit, seeds or dishwasher-safe grease throw water where the racks are not. Ten minutes of that plus a hot rinse resolves a real share of the calls we are asked to make, and costs nothing.

## During the cycle (during)

Listen and look once, mid-wash. A dishwasher that is filling, spraying and sounds like it is working has a wash-quality or coverage problem. One that is silent, humming without spraying, or stopping partway has a mechanical or electrical fault. Those are two different diagnostic paths, and knowing which one you are on changes both the estimate and the parts we bring.

## After the fix, keeping it fixed (after)

Clean the filter monthly, keep the rinse aid reservoir filled, load so the arms can turn, and leave the door ajar for twenty minutes at the end of a cycle rather than opening it wide the moment it finishes. In a kitchen at this humidity, how the door is handled at the end of the cycle changes the drying result more than any setting on the panel.

## Two complaints that sound identical

Almost every dishwasher call in Northeast Florida arrives as one of two sentences:
"it does not clean any more" or "the dishes come out wet". Each of those has a
mechanical explanation and an installation explanation, and they need to be told
apart before anyone spends money on parts.

The mechanical version is a pump, a heater, a valve or a board. The installation
version is a drain hose that was never looped, a machine that is not level, an
opening that traps the door, or a circuit shared with something it should not be
sharing with. The second kind is far more common than homeowners expect, and it is
the reason the diagnostic looks at the cabinet as well as the appliance.

## Drying, humidity and condensation

Several of the dishwashers we service — Bosch in particular — dry by condensation
rather than with an exposed heating element. Vapour condenses on a cool stainless tub
wall and drains away. It is quiet and efficient, and it depends entirely on the load
being warmer than the tub at the end of the cycle.

In a house running at roughly 75 percent relative humidity, opening the door the
moment the cycle ends floods the tub with damp room air and stops the process dead.
Plastics stay wet. This is the single most common "broken" dishwasher we are called
to that turns out not to be broken at all. Let the cycle stand, crack the door rather
than swinging it open, keep the rinse aid topped up so water sheets off instead of
beading, and put plastics on the upper rack where the air is warmest.

Where drying really has failed, the causes are specific and checkable: a rinse aid
dispenser that is not releasing, a vent flap that has stuck shut, a heater circuit
that is open, or a door seal letting warm vapour out through a corner.

## Spray coverage and wash temperature

A dishwasher cleans with heat, chemistry, time and mechanical energy, and only the
last of those is visible. When results fall off, we measure rather than assume.

Coverage comes first: are both arms turning freely, are the jets clear, is anything
in the racks blocking rotation, is the upper arm's feed intact. A single blocked jet
changes the pattern across a whole rack. Then fill volume, because a machine that is
filling short is spraying at reduced pressure through the entire cycle. Then wash
temperature, logged rather than guessed — a cycle that never reaches temperature
produces exactly the "it stopped cleaning" complaint, and the cause is usually the
heater circuit or a thermostat rather than anything the owner did.

Detergent behaviour is part of the same picture. A tablet still sitting in the
dispenser at the end of a cycle means the dispenser did not open, the water was too
cool to dissolve it, or the spray never reached it — three different faults with one
symptom.

## Drain faults are mechanical, not chemical

Standing water in the sump is its own category. The usual causes are a blocked
filter, food debris in the drain pump impeller, a kinked or improperly looped drain
hose, or a check valve that will not seat.

In this region we also see the disposal knockout plug left in place after a kitchen
remodel — the dishwasher drains into a disposal port that was never opened, so it
cannot drain at all. That is common in the older housing stock through Riverside,
Avondale, San Marco and Ortega, where dishwashers have been retrofitted into cabinet
runs that never planned for one. Those same retrofits give us drain lines run without
a high loop or an air gap, which lets sink water siphon back into the machine and
produces a "dirty dishwasher" complaint with a plumbing cause.

## Access, weight and what fits

A built-in dishwasher comes out forward, on the floor, past a door and a countertop
lip, and in an older kitchen the opening is frequently tighter than the modern
appliance standard assumes. Where a replacement is the honest recommendation, the
opening decides what will physically fit, and we measure it during the diagnostic
rather than after something has been ordered. Where the fix is a repair, we still
have to get the machine out and back without damaging a stone counter or a finished
panel, and that is planned before anything is unscrewed.

## What a visit includes

We check the installation and the drain path, inspect the filter, sump, spray arms
and jets, measure fill volume and wash temperature, and test the door seal, latch and
dispenser. If the verdict is that the machine is working correctly and the
installation is the problem, that is what the written estimate will say.
