Humidity, condensation and door gaskets

A gasket that has taken a set leaks warm humid air continuously. Everything else that goes wrong with the refrigerator follows from that.

    Before the dew point climbs

    Test every gasket in spring, before the humid months. Close the door on a dollar bill at four points on each door — top, bottom, hinge side and handle side — and pull. Even, firm resistance at all four means the gasket is compressing. Anywhere it slides out easily is a leak, and that is where the condensation will start in July.

    Wipe the gasket folds with warm water and a mild detergent every few weeks and dry them properly. Mould grows in the folds, not on the face, and once it is established it holds moisture against the rubber and accelerates the hardening that caused the leak. Use the range hood every time water is boiling — that vapour has to land somewhere and the coldest surface in the room is the refrigerator door.

    After frost has appeared

    Frost on the back wall, ice around the evaporator cover, or a fan clattering against ice means the defrost system has already fallen behind a continuous air leak. Do not simply defrost it and carry on; it will return within weeks. The leak has to be found and closed, or the same ice load rebuilds and the fresh food compartment goes warm again.

The number that explains the summer

Northeast Florida runs about 75 percent mean relative humidity and takes roughly 53 inches of rain a year. Through the summer the dew point sits high for weeks at a time, and the dew point — not the relative humidity — is what decides whether a surface sweats.

A refrigerator is a machine for holding a cold surface next to a warm room. In a climate where the air is carrying this much water, the boundary between those two things is under constant load, and that boundary is a strip of rubber.

What a tired gasket actually does

Magnetic door gaskets fail slowly and unspectacularly. They take a set — flattened along the hinge side where the door rests, crushed at a corner, hardened with age until the profile no longer springs back. Nothing looks broken. The door still closes and still feels magnetic.

But it leaks, and unlike a door left ajar, it leaks continuously, twenty-four hours a day, all summer.

Follow the consequences in order.

Condensation at the seam. Warm humid air meets a cold liner and gives up its water there. Beading on the cabinet face and moisture on the door edge is the first visible sign. On a panel-ready or integrated installation with a custom wood front, it is hidden behind the panel and you may see nothing at all for months.

Mould in the folds. The gasket profile has folds designed to compress. Those folds now hold moisture permanently, and mould establishes in them. Homeowners usually notice the smell before the sight of it. The mould holds moisture against the rubber and hardens it further, which widens the leak.

Ice on the evaporator. Every gram of water that leaks in ends up as frost. The defrost system is sized for a normal moisture load, not a continuous leak, so it falls behind. Frost accumulates behind the rear panel, airflow through the evaporator drops, and the evaporator fan starts hitting ice — that clattering, buzzing noise that comes and goes.

A warm refrigerator with a cold freezer. With airflow choked, the compressor runs almost continuously and the fresh-food compartment still drifts up. That is the point at which most people call, and the sentence we hear is usually “I think it’s low on gas.” It very rarely is.

Where else the same physics shows up

Dishwashers that leave plastics wet. Several of the machines we service dry by condensing vapour onto a cool stainless tub wall rather than baking it off with an element. That needs the load to be warmer than the tub. Open the door the moment the cycle ends in a 75 percent humidity kitchen and you fill the tub with damp room air and stop the process. Let it stand twenty minutes.

Gas burners that click and will not light. Boil-over residue plus humid air leaves a conductive film on the igniter electrode. It does not fully dry between uses, the spark tracks through it to ground, and the burner clicks endlessly — often firing every igniter on the range at once. Cleaning and drying the electrode fixes most of these without a part.

Range hoods. Ventilation in this climate is humidity control as much as smoke control. A hood that has lost capture puts every pot of boiling water into the room, and the room puts it onto the nearest cold surface.

Gaskets can often be reconditioned rather than replaced, and alignment problems are frequently the real cause — a door carrying a heavy custom panel that has dropped on its hinges will never seal evenly no matter how good the rubber is.
